Abstract

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is formed during the metabolism of methionine. This amino acid is not part of proteins, but is an important intermediate product in biochemical reactions. Elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood are associated with the risk of developing various diseases, including cardiovascular and cognitive impairment. Therefore, homocysteine metabolism plays a key role in maintaining homeostasis in the body and is an important object of research in biochemistry and medicine.
